The Apply AI Strategy is out!
First quick reactions regarding the impact of AI in the public sector:
- Interesting focus on AI skills for workers, monitoring impact in the workforce: AI skills academy, Pact for Skills, Digital Competence Framework for Citizens
- Promotes use of AI in the health sector, although the document recognises that the implementation is uneven
- They mention the potential to make the public sector more efficient, referring to these JRC studies: JRC’s report on the potential of generative AI for the public sector: https://publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC139825 and the Joint Research Centre’s report on the potential of generative AI for the public sector: https://publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC139825
- Positive: Mentions the “need to address potential biases, investing in infrastructure and skills, and ensuring transparency and trust will be therefore key to successful AI integration in the public sector” and that "helping AI startups grow through increased demand for European-made open source AI solutions" which can also strengthen EU AI sovereignty.
- Aware of the implications that AI will have on the workforce and its potential differences across demographic groups, sectors, and regions, the Commission will actively monitor the impact of AI on the labour market
- Unclear, how unions and the public sector will be part of all of these strategies and plans. We will need to monitor the specific plans developing from the Strategy, including the participation in the "Apply AI Alliance"
